The Kanto-sho or Fighting spirit prize will be awarded to the Makunouchi bench rikishi with the most 'perfect days'. A 'perfect day', is when all of a bench rikishi's 'team' (ie the rikishi assigned with points, and does not include any rikishi on the bench), are victorious on any day of the basho.  The rikishi will therefore have scored a maximum possible of 14 points for that day. In the case that 2 or more bench rikishi have the same number of 'perfect days' at the end of the basho, the lowest ranked bench rikishi will be awarded the prize.

To be eligible for this prize, a Bench rikishi must have registered at least 3 'perfect days'. If no Bench rikishi manage to make this requirement, no Fighting spirit prize will be awarded for that Bench Basho, and the prize will be kept for the next Bench Basho.

To be eligible for this prize, the Bench rikishi must be kachi-koshi (have at least 8 wins).

With the expansion of Bench Sumo and the creation of Juryo, Makushita and Sandanme divisions, these divisions now also have their very own Fighting Sprit Prizes. They are called the "Jejima Founders Prize" for Juryo, the "Gaijingai Nice Guy Prize" for Makushita and the "Bandey, Bob and Jackster International Cooperation Cup" for Sandanme .
